As we come to the end of the year 2021, marked with challenges and crisis yet tinged with hope and resilience, I would like to take this time to thank you all for your unending support, your prayer and your commitment to support our work and ministry in Indonesia. Because of your help, we can continue our service to bring hope by providing health education for mother and child, improving livelihood, combating Tuberculosis and assisting in Disaster and Emergency response.

As we look to 2022 with new hopes for a brighter future and better situation during this pandemic, Yayasan Menara Agung Pengharapan Internasional renews the commitment to serve the most unreached community and strengthen the organization – despite any hardships, challenges or crises that come our way. We still need your great support to achieve our goals and missions, and make a change together as we work in partnership.

KEY HIGLIGHTS IN 2021

Children Health Education through Children Happy Group) in Nias Barat

To strengthen the children knowledge and skill in health, WASH and Nutrition through education and improve the capacity of the community to produce nutritious food to support healthy behaviours practices.

The project has reached 12.522 primary school-age children with health education in 105 villages in Nias Barat District. Total 612 households have been trained on organic farming and increased food availability at home. The vegetable intake increased significantly among children and the family as well.

Sigi Response Project, Central Sulawesi

Post to the earthquake in Central Sulawesi, we continue to serve the affected community to develop healthy habits among vulnerable children to live healthy after the disaster and improve the capacity of the vulnerable households to have sufficient nutritious food for their children and family.

The project has reached 1.000 children, trained 114 mothers on organic farming in 6 villages in 3 sub-districts in Sigi District, and provided organic farming training for 114 mothers.

The project conducted health education, emotional recovery activities and disaster risk reduction for children. Children learned about personal hygiene, sanitation, nutrition, and diarrhoea and worm infection prevention. Project created activity where children can recover from fear and sadness due to disaster. Children also learned how disaster can happen and how to escape it.

Emergency Response for Sulawesi Barat

The project help people affected by the earthquake in Majene-Sulawesi Barat to have their basic needs to survive in Mamuju and Majene by distributed food and non-food items to the people affected by the earthquake in 24 spots in Mamuju and seven spots in Majene. Food consisting of rice and sugar, and baby biscuits have been distributed to 2.919 households. Non-food consisting of buckets, sanitation kits, baby diapers, sanitary napkins and masks have been distributed to 2.811 households.

The project has served 3.467 people (585 children and 2.882 adults) in 11 Mamuju and Majene- Sulawesi Barat province villages.

Strengthening Community Livelihood in Hibala Island

The project focused on fishery and organic farming. Through fishery activities, the project introduced new equipment and a new method of fishing to increase catchment. Sea preservation has been promoted, such as clean beaches, stopping fish poisoning during fishing and stop using electric shock or hand bombs for fishing.

At least 400 people benefitted from the project in 17 villages in Hibala Island and three villages around Hibala Island in Nias Selatan District.

70 fishermen have been trained and coached on operating the equipment properly. The catchments have been increased significantly, and more than 50% of the fishermen had savings. Improve their awareness of the community on sea preservation such as clean beaches and stop throwing rubbish into the sea, garbage management, nutrition and how tobacco and alcohol affect human health.

259 farmers have been trained in organic farming. This method promoted local materials, low cost and easy to replicate. Farmers learned how to produce local vegetable seeds so they will be able to continue the organic farming after the project end. 65% of the farmers have to experience abundant yields and selling to the neighbours. The availability of vegetables increased significantly, and the consumption of vegetables.

Hibala Mobile Clinic, South Nias

The project provided primary health care through a mobile clinic operated from Island to Island and from village to village. This year, the project has served 1.036 people in 17 villages scattered on 12 Islands and provided a referral to the public hospital for further treatment.

Health education was also conducted during the mobile clinic, and the topic covered major diseases in the area, such as; how to prevent high blood pressure, how to handle blood sugar and nutrition.
